BARCELONA Barcelona Airport is located south-west of the city of Barcelona, between the city limits of El Prat de Llobregat, Viladecans and Sant Boi. It is just 3 km from the Port of Barcelona, one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean for container traffic and the leader in the cruise market. It is also located near the Free Zone Consortium, one of the most important industrial and logistics centres in Spain. To modernise and prepare Barcelona Airport for future air traffic demands, major improvements to infrastructure and services are currently being conducted. The Barcelona Plan will transform the airport with the construction of a new terminal area and the extension of the airfield with a new runway, in addition to other relevant infrastructures. These improvements will consolidate Barcelona's position as a major European hub airport, increasing both its domestic and international connections. Since the Olympic Games were held, passenger traffic at Barcelona airport has increased by over 200%, growing from 10 million passengers in 1992 to over 32 million in 2007. In 2008, it handled 30,208,134 passengers, 321,491 flight operations and 104,239 tonnes of cargo. A new Terminal Building was inaugurated in June 2009. Most European airlines, and many international ones, operate flights from its international terminal. The airport has three terminals.
