ABOUT SLOVAK REPUBLIC
Modern Slovakia became an independent nation-state in 1993 following a peaceful separation from the Czech Republic. Sandwiched between two superpowers of the middle ages, Austro-Hungarian and Russian influences are obvious in its historical architecture. Never achieving the accumulation of wealth of nearby important cities Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Krakow or Kiev. There is a beautiful subtlety in the compact "old town" sections of Slovak cities contrasting to the sometimes overwhelming grandeur of her neighbours.

The Slovak Republic or ‘Slovakia’ is dubbed the "Tatra Tiger" due to it advanced economic development. Successfully transformed to a market-driven economy the banking sector is almost completely in private hands, and foreign investment has risen. Private enterprise is flourishing in the Slovak Republic due in part to low labour costs, low tax rates and a well educated labour force

Slovakia became the 16th member of the Eurozone when it joined the Euro currency on 1 January 2009 and has recently been characterized by sustained high economic growth.

In 2006, Slovakia achieved the highest growth of GDP (8.9%) among the members of the OECD and unemployment decreased to 7.5% in October 2008 from a 19.2% high less than a decade earlier.

In 2008, the Ministry of Finance pronounce Slovakia's economy developed enough to became an aid provider rather than a recipient.

Primarily mountainous the Slovak Republic is bordered to the North by its Carpathian Mountains and the high peaks of the Tatra mountains. At the Polish border the stunning ‘High Tatras’, including the highest point in Slovakia Gerlachovský štít at 2,655 metres,  are a popular skiing destination and home to many scenic lakes and valleys.

The world famous Danube River winds through Slovakia, as well as the Váh and the Hron. The Tisa marks the Slovak-Hungarian border for 5 km.
