Bergen – capital of western Norway and gateway to the fjords

Bergen, the old Hanseatic city, is proud of its shipping, trading and cultural traditions. During the Middle Ages Bergen was Scandinavia’s largest town, and today retains its history in the Hanseatic quarters at Bryggen. Bergen has a warm and friendly atmosphere and offers a wonderful blend of museums, galleries, restaurants and little shops. A visit to the fish market is a must, as is the trip up to the mountain Fløyen, a great viewpoint reached with a funicular train and the home of the famous composer Edward Grieg.

Bergen is also the natural gateway to fjords like Hardangerfjorden and Sognefjorden, and it is the start and end point for journeys on the renowned Coastal Steamer route.
